“I have consistently called for social equity in the marijuana legalization era. L.A. County District Attorney Jackie Lacey opposed marijuana legalization, and then dragged her feet to finally effectuate the expungement of old convictions after long being called on to do so. A conveniently-timed press release right before an election does not absolve her failure to act. Further, L.A. County still prosecutes criminal misdemeanors on unlicensed businesses that are disproportionately run by people of color, and have not yet been included in the emerging industry. Under Lacey’s leadership, L.A. County also continues to circumvent criminal justice reform by overcharging low-level drug possession.
“Social equity isn’t just about clearing past convictions, it’s about taking active steps to end prosecutorial practices that have long devastated communities of color.”
